How to Properly Care for Your Grass Type

Is your grass not looking as green or healthy as you would like it to? If you’ve tried everything and are at your wit's end, your problem could be not knowing your correct grass type. Among other things, identifying your grass type is key to achieving that beautiful green lawn you’ve been dreaming of.

In southern Ontario, there are four common grass types that you could possibly have. If you want to learn what grass type you have and how to properly take care of it, read on to achieve your dream lawn!

Tall Fescue Grass
Tall fescue grass is a cool season grass that is deep green and coarse in texture. It can withstand the hot Canadian summer and only needs a few hours of sunlight during the day, so shady lawns are perfect for this grass type. Tall fescue grass is resilient and can handle high traffic. Caring for this grass type is easy because it doesn’t require a lot of seasonal fertilization and grows quickly, even with infrequent watering.

Ryegrass

Ryegrass is shiny and bright in colour. This grass grows well in cool climates, but can also endure dry summers and harsh Canadian winters. Due to its durable blades, it can survive high traffic as well. Ryegrass requires a bit more dedication, as it needs regular watering and should be fertilized several times a year.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass is a deep blue-green colour and is the most common grass type in southern Ontario. This grass has the durability to handle hot summers and all that the Canadian weather throws at it. Caring for kentucky bluegrass requires some maintenance with frequent watering and soil that provides good drainage.

Bentgrass

Bentgrass is not an ideal grass type for homeowners and is generally used for golf courses and other sport turfs. It is a cool season grass but can also endure changing climates. Bentgrass is a demanding grass type and requires regular watering and frequent cutting to prevent it from becoming prickly and overly thick.
