The Benefits of Spring Fertilization

Springtime brings on a whole bunch of To-Do lists with it, and one of them is taking care of your lawn properly and preparing it for the season and the months following. One of the most important aspects of lawn care is spring fertilization.

Fertilization plays a key role in getting you to that lush, green lawn, so remember this information so you can get it done properly. Firstly, remember that some fertilizers aren’t as effective this time of year. Trying to encourage the meager wisps of grass when your lawn is still drying from the winter and recent snowfalls or still hard from the cold may not allow you to get the full benefits of spring fertilization.

Luckily, with Hometurf’s slow-release fertilizer, it will last longer into the spring and really take effect when your lawn needs it. It may be tempting to try to get that grass growing, but without the proper spring fertilizer, you’ll only be encouraging the top layer of soil and not allowing the deep roots to gain strength.

When it’s finally time to fertilize your lawn, you should be aware of what you’re using and why it’s important. Most fertilizers use a combination of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, but we choose to use a phosphorus-free fertilizer.

Here is a quick explanation of the benefits and reasons why we do or don’t use each element:

Nitrogen is most important – it encourages root and blade growth. It’s also what makes your grass that lush green colour.  However, not all high-nitrogen fertilizers are created equal. Our slow-release formula allows for a more consistent growth and a season-long healthy lawn.

Potassium helps your grass resist disease and strengthen its roots, making it more resistant to weather changes. This is one of the most important factors to making sure your lawn has long-term stability throughout the summer months and beyond.

Phosphorus is related to how your grass is able to store and use energy (essentially its abilities in photosynthesis), but because of the risk of it leaching into the water, we have removed it from our product. When this happens, the phosphorus can create harmful algae blooms in nearby bodies of water and negatively impact our environment. Most soils have enough phosphorus on their own to grow healthily, so we just removed it altogether.

For spring fertilization, we recommend a high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage blade growth.

Fertilizing your lawn in the spring will help stimulate its growth, increase its nutrient uptake, and help it bounce back from any stressors it may face.
